Lightsail vs EC2: Which Should You Choose?
This is a common early decision within AWS itself. Lightsail and EC2 both run virtual servers, but they’re built for different levels of complexity and control.

Best for: Simple applications, single-site hosting, and anyone who wants predictable flat pricing without deep AWS networking knowledge.
EC2
Best for: Applications that need specific instance types, auto scaling, custom VPC architecture, or deep integration with other AWS services.
Cost Considerations
For a small, single-application setup, Lightsail’s bundled pricing is often cheaper and more predictable than assembling the equivalent EC2 + EBS + data transfer setup. As you add more services or need auto scaling, EC2 with properly managed Reserved Instances or Savings Plans typically becomes more cost-efficient — but only with active cost management, which Lightsail doesn’t require in the same way.
Performance & Security
Under the hood, Lightsail instances run on the same underlying AWS infrastructure as EC2, so raw performance for comparable instance sizes is similar. The difference is in configuration flexibility, not underlying hardware quality. Security is comparable as well — Lightsail’s simplified firewall interface offers less granularity than EC2 security groups, which matters more for complex multi-service architectures than for a single simple site.
Which Should You Choose?
Single site / simple app
Lightsail is usually the right starting point — no reason to take on EC2’s complexity for a straightforward use case.

EC2 becomes worthwhile once you need auto scaling, custom networking, or integration with managed services beyond basic compute and storage.
